Who discover fungi ?
- Alexander Fleming Discovered fungi in 1929, he is a Scottish physician-scientist.
- Fleming discover Penicillium.
- At first he noticed the green mold of penicillin grown in culture dish of staphylococcus, in this way he discovered the Penicillium.
What is fungi?
- Fungi are group of living Microorganism classified in their own kingdom, that means its neither not plants or animals or bacteria.
- Fungi are Eukaryotic organism such as yeast, molds, mushrooms, etc...
- Fungi are lack in photosynthesis, that means chlorophyll not present.
What are the types of fungi
The fungi are classified into 4 divisions. recently added one,
1. chytridiomycota - chytrids
2.Zygomycota - bread molds
3.Ascomycota - yeasts and sac fungi
4.Basidiomycota - club fungi
5.Phylum Glomeromycota
What are the characteristics of fungi ?
Heterotrophic:
fungi needs energy so it depends on other plants and animals to grow this is know as heterotrophic fungi.
Multi cellular or unicellular :
The fungi may be unicellular or multicellular in nature.
mostly fungi are multicellular organism.
unicellular are like yeast - saccharomyces.
Saprophytes:
Some fungi release enzyme in dead plants and animals to decay or decompose, this type of fungi is know as saprophytic fungi.
